Around the Storsteinsfjell

With an altitude of 1903m, the Storsteinsfjell is the highest mountain in the area, and you can't avoid noticing it when climbing any of the mountains between Abisko and Kebnekaise; a huge massif in the west, clad with several glaciers. Pitching our camp at the bank of Sälkajåkka, we were literally camped at the foot of the mountain, with an ascent of 1150 meter to the summit. But, strangely, even how impressive the mountain is when seen from far away, the mountain is much more anonymous when you get close to it, as its wide flanks only makes it possible to look half way up the mountain, with the summit out of view further behind. We had planned to spend an extra day or two in this camp and try to climb the Storsteinsfjell, but in spite of the clear weather the night before, the next day was breaking with heavy clouds in the sky and a limited view, so we decided not to go anywhere. Instead we spent the time socializing us in the camp and build an snow cave or two.
