Anniversary hike in Abisko

At the end of my first long hike in Lappland in Summer 1980, I met a German couple in Abisko, and this was the beginning of a long row of visits to Germany and many an interesting discussion during our many trips to the Harz. A few times we also made it to the Alps, and when ten years were about to pass, both Gerhard and me had got the idea of celebrating ten years of friendship on an anniversary hike in Lappland in July 1990, with our meeting place from way back then Abisko as the starting point. From here we were to hike all the way through the Abisko mountains, and reach Alesvagge just in time to be able to climb Kåtotjåkka, the highest peak in the Mårma massif on the anniversary day itself. We were however delayed by bad weather on our way from Abisko, and it wasn't before our anniversary day itself we reached Alesvagge. It was now too late to reach the mountain of Kåtotjåkka, but the same evening we were able to celebrate our private jubilee with delicious food and a small bottle of champagne, carried all the way for just this purpose.
