In the last moment an old school mate, Ole, had joined me for the ride to Mera, and this was okay with me as long as he could follow me. I have always been strong at altitude and purposely had planned a forced walk-in, disrespecting the altitude gained, as I didn't want to waste time on unnecessary acclimatization. A few days after our arrival in Kathmandu we flew to Lukla, and already the next day we left Lukla by an indistant path going east, accompanied by three porters we had hired to bring our gear into the basecamp under Mera.
