Instead we crossed onto the glacier itself, and this was much better. The glacier was mostly covered with moraine, and except for making it a somewhat bumpy trail, it appeared to be a good and useful way up, and mostly quite safe too. We now ascended towards a distinct mountain, which later showed to be just a shoulder to Aconcagua with no name, even though the shoulder had an elevation of more than 5000m. Sheltered behind this shoulder was Camp 1, so we only had to find the best way up the glacier.
