| Belém was lying right next to the Tagus River, and was thus guarding the entrance to this the most important river of Portugal. Thus it is obvious that the town grew along the river bank, and even today the river has a particular role in the activities of the town. So once I was well arrived in Belém I naturally soon set my course for the river. |
