The eternal city

That weekend I had stayed at a hotel near St. Peter's Square, and after having walked for some time along the Tiber I turned north to move in the direction of the railway station. Rome is an extremely old city, founded almost 2800 years ago, so it cannot be any surprise that you hardly can put a spade in the ground without encountering old building remains. I had thus not walked 50 yards from the river before I had to wind my way around an excavation of Portico d'Ottavia i the old city wall.
