We had now succeeded in forcing our way all way up Valle del Colorado, but it had not been without expenses, for it had been somewhat beyond normal limits to have needed to ford the main river no less than seven times to get here. But now we finally had reached our base camp in Pirca de Polacos, which had been the aim for this voyage so far. And on the other side of the valley was Cerro Mercedario, the mountain which from the start had lured me to this place since I from the beginning had seen it from Aconcagua.
